Inside

UAE

The United Arab Emirates is beyond Dubai’s Burj al Khalifa, or Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed’s Grand Mosque. It shouldn’t be restricted to just shopping around malls nor staying at iconic hotels. The region is also more than pristine beaches and ‘exciting’ water parks. What else then, one might ask.
Traditional camel rides across sand dunes and treks to remote mountains are as differently experiential as souqs that sell spices and scents and historic trading posts in Fujairah. Listening to stories of the region’s Arabian culture under desert skies and a visit to the Dhow boat building yard can be as reverberating as anything else. So, pick up the phone and dial one of our destination experts or send us an e-mail to know what all pleasant surprises await you in the Arabian Peninsula.

Experiences

SOUK SIGHTS

Once your initial fascination with the glitzy shopping malls weathers off, embrace the Gold-Perfume-Spice Souks of dubai. A feast for the senses, these Souks are home to more than a few hundred shops that are more than a dazzling display of colour, scent and taste-ticklers. 300! That’s right, with about 300 shops, the Gold Souk is the largest jewellery bazaar in all of Arabia. Saffron, local tea blends and dates, rugs, rolls of fabric… the range to seduce you into indulgent shopping may be here.

DHOW CRUISE

Yachts may be the thing in vogue today, but nothing compares to the traditional wooden Dhow, a show-stealer in Dubai. Traditional vessels that are now engine-powered are also decorated with lights and comfort seating. This two-three hour cruise comes with traditional dances*, meals* and is accompanied with a commentary* on the sights and sounds on the way. *Inclusions may vary with individual operators

AL FAHIDI HISTORICAL DISTRICT

An important ‘different’ place to visit is ‘Old Dubai’ – the Al Fahidi Historical District. One of the oldest neighbourhoods in Dubai dating back to the 19th Century, unexpected sights await to catch you by surprise – like narrow alleyways, wind towers, art galleries and small family-run restaurants or tea houses. The highlight here is Al Bastakiya’s Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding where traditional Arabic lunches are served – an eye opener into Emirati culture and customs.

HILI OASIS

Near the Fossil Valley is the Hili Oasis where the Hili Archaeological Park provides evidence for an agricultural village that existed in the UAE. A walk through the beehive-shaped Bronze Age tombs at Al Ain’s Jebel Hafit Desert Park will take you through artefacts that shows Bronze Age trade links with ancient Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Indus Valley.

HOUSE OF ARTISANS

The House of Artisans (Qasr Al Hosn) is a world away from the vibes of the global city. The Sadu art (a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding) is a traditional Bedouin form of weaving of wool. Other types of ancient weaving using date-palm leaves can also be seen here. The toast of the experience here is the coffee ceremony.

FUJAIRAH'S SNOOPY ISLAND AND WADI WURAYAH

The placid waters of Fujairah’s sea offers an exciting marine world and a wreck nearby. The UNESCO Biosphere of Wadi Wurayah is a sight to behold and delve deep into flora and fauna that are endemic to the Arabian peninsula, and traditional Arabian farming practices.
