Inside

India – South

They say South India is the best or gentler introduction to India. The south of the Vindhyas present a starkly different picture in terms of style symbols like art, Dravidian architecture and a rich cultural tapestry. One of the major highlights of the region is the majestic Western Ghat mountain ranges extending a massive 1,600km, providing idyllic retreats. Combine these with placid backwaters, large lakes and stunning beaches, all you are left spelbound. A number of empires, kingdoms and their rulers – renowned across the world for their pomp and grandeur – have left an indelible effect on the arts and culture of the region.

South India

?

If an Ayurveda led wellness experience is what you are seeking for, without doubt the monsoon season in Kerala is the best. For all round amiable weather and great sunlight for stunning photography, the months of November through March are great. The summer months of March to June are excellent for adventure along the coast and the hills.

Places to Visit

Experiences

HAMPI'S THEATRE OF INSPIRATION

Go back in time and celebrate Vijayanagar’s regal splendour of the 15th-17th centuries in Karnataka’s Hampi. Walk its streets of which Britain’s ‘Wanderlust’ magazine quipped: “if rocks had dreams, it would be Hampi”. Don’t just pass by; stop, look and imagine yourself playing different roles – of kings, queens, officers, soldiers. Hampi’s intricately carved temple architecture symbolized by the exquisite stone chariot and the ‘musical pillars’ and the Vijaya Vittala temple complex will leave you spellbound. Top it all with a riverfront seat sipping lemonade, under the shade of a tree at the ‘Mango’ restaurant. Hampi, simply inspires!

CHETTINAD'S HERITAGE HOMES

Tamil Nadu’s Chettinad heritage spans hundreds of years of opulent lifestyles lived by the ‘Nattukotai Chettiars’ (a mercantile community trading in gems along a cluster of 76 villages) in the 18th Century. This dusty region in southern Tamilnadu is replete with mansions that were built during their heyday reflect their taste for international aesthetics – be it Burma teak or Italian marble. Wander through the villages, stay the night at an authentic heritage home; follow it up with visits to the market and buy antiques. Of course, don’t forget to let your tongue taste a Chettinad curry – chicken, mutton or vegetarian!

HYDERABAD'S RANGE

The swanky Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is the first sign of modernity to have rubbed off on the Deccan’s Hyderabad with its significant Nizami influence. Driving through Gachibowli (the luxe IT, Financial district) might make you wonder if you are in London’s Canary Wharf. Despite its embrace of modernity, Hyderabad has retained its tryst with traditional heritage as is clear in the architectural style of its buildings, and, the unmistakable aroma of the iconic ‘biryani’ dish that fills the air in the city’s bustling centre. Irani chai, bun maska, haleem will all leave your heart bountifully full and immensely satisfied after a date with the expansive Golconda Fort.

GO GREEN WITH ENVY IN KERALA

Landing into any airport in Kerala is like viewing a coconut-tree top carpet that extends hundreds of miles. The very name of the state comes from the word ‘kera’ (coconut). But that’s only the beginning. Explore the mesmerizing backwaters of Kumarakom at a slow pace aboard a houseboat (a tourism innovation stemming from rice boats used to transport men and material). Get a ‘live’ telecast of the calm-yet-busy rural village life. Walk through an unending spread of tea plantations, interacting with tea leaf-plucking women. Watch how classical dancers (Kathakali, Mohiniyattom) prepare hours before a performance. Savour ‘the world’s best. breakfast*’ – puttu-banana or kadala, or ‘frill’ appams and stew. And before leaving (if you have to), indulge in a range of ‘kasavu’ (gold-lined clothes) products. We are reasonably sure you would go green with envy about life in Kerala – with India’s most advanced quality of life index.

AYURVEDA IN KERALA

Kerala is also the land of traditional Ayurveda, the most natural way of healing using all things herbal. If the word ‘immerse’ needed an apt example, it would the act of surrendering to the hands of trained masseuses under the watchful monitoring of qualified doctors (yes, Ayurveda is a science), when they apply oils to patients (yes, Ayurveda treats a wide range of health issues). As oils do their work with the help of rhythmic movements that make them go through the pores of the body, simply close your eyes – you’re immersing yourself in the world of natural healing.

COFFEE COUNTRY, KARNATAKA

Traditionally a tea-drinking nation, ever since Baba Budan the sufi saint smuggled in 7 seeds of coffee and planted them on the hills of Chikmagalur, India accorded a warm embrace to the quintessential drink. Coorg has come to be the strongest and most popular symbol of Coffee in India. The Western Ghat range of mountains are home to the sweeter Arabica coffee. Coorg shot into fame thanks to a heady mix of coffee and the brilliantly evocative Kodava culture – cuisines, costume, coffee estates. Though monsoons are heavy here, the season is sure to create a lasting memory when the aroma of coffee fills the air during this time.
