Inside

Oman

A relatively recent entrant into the world of tourism, Oman is one of the oldest human-inhabited places on earth. Deserts, mountains, oases, traditional villages and a friendly climate together makes this a quick short haul getaway from some of the busiest metropolises of the region. Muscat the Capital is refreshingly low-rise for a modern city, and Salalah, Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar Mountains and Sur make up some of the must-visit destinations for a mix of seaside, quaint interiors and unexpectedly beautiful landscapes.

What's the best time to visit

Oman

?

The months between October and April are the best time to visit Oman. If you enjoy diving, the waters of this coastal Arab nation will be just right in March just before the onset of summer. Moreover, the pre-Easter days are certainly less busy than the peak seasons before and after.

Places to Visit

Experiences

SULTAN QABOOS GRAND MOSQUE

See the second largest hand-woven carpet in the world here (by 600 women in Iran over four years). The mosque built using 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone is an opportunity to explore a blend of Omani and Islamic architectural styles.

SALALAH'S EARTHY FLAVOUR

This quaint fishing town allows you to quietly soak up the sun’s rays on the pristine Arabian coastal beach, and also engage in hiking and walking along trails that help explore the wild side of Oman. The annual monsoon rains transform the desert into lush greenery and a collection of waterfalls. The Frankincense Road (on the UNESCO World Heritage List) opens itself to a world of rich cultural history, including glimpses into the ancient settlements of Sumaharam, Wadi Dawkah and Al Balid. The heritage of Frankincense can be felt in visits to farms. Wadi Darbat Reserve is picturesque and a boat/kayak ride or a walking trail allows you to explore caves, natural springs and more. The lake has some of the best turquoise rock pools.

MIRBAT AND OMANI COOKING

The historic town of Mirbat, 75km away from Salalah blends trade routes, coral stone houses, beaches and hikes. This is as authentic as Oman can get, and untouched by mass tourism. Interact with fishermen who return at dawn, learn the traditional way of Omani cuisine and visit its markets.

HAJAR MOUNTAIN TRAILS

The wildest and highest terrain in Oman, the Hajar mountains are rich in plant life compared to other Arab countries. Walk and hike up these mountains to get up close with nature. Stargazing at night in the company of a guide will be enriching. A drive across the mountain range passing deep wadis and small villages where people still live in ancient buildings. Walk up to the abandoned oasis of Birkat al Mouz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
