Places to Visit
Botswana’s first and greatest game reserve, Chobe is usually known as the land of the giants – elephants – for the sheer number that graze through its different landscapes. A visit here during the dry season could help view elephants in the thousands lining the banks of the river and crossing the water.
A short drive from here takes you to the largest waterfall in the world – Victoria Falls. Visit during the rains, and the ‘spray’ from the falls can be seen from miles away as the waters tumble down in a torrential thunder.
The beautiful region of the Okavango Delta is an incredibly large ecosystem helped by the river Okavango that flows approximately 1,300km into the Kalahari Desert. The region is home to more than 164 species of mammals including large herds of elephants, lions, buffalos and more than 440 species of birds. The Delta has been acclaimed as one of the best safari destinations in the world.
The Moremi reserve covers nearly 40 percent of the Okavango Delta and was created by an African tribe – the BaTawana people. What makes Moremi special is that the BaTawana people have taken upon themselves the stewardship of Moremi, concerned about depletion in numbers of wildlife.
The mix of forests, floodplains, lagoons and waterways are what makes Moremi different from other reserves. This creates an astonishing variety of Cape wild dogs, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, zebras, impalas, antelopes and about 500 species of birds.
The defining feature of Africa’s remoteness is Central Kalahari. Here the months after the rains results in the development of large herds of Oryx and Impalas, creating hunting by Cheetahs and black maned lions. Compared to other reserves, Central Kalahari may not be as vast, but is as remote as it can get.
