Places to Visit
Historic buildings and modern architecture seamlessly blend to create a charming city. Dotted with souqs (like Muttrah Souq), mosques and ancient sites, Muscat lies in between the rocky Hajar mountains and the waters of the Omani Gulf. The coastline of this laid-back city is lined with luxury hotels and cultural landmarks like the Royal Opera House and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Just outside Muscat is Wadi Shab – excellent for hikes and a swim in the caves.
For the sheer beauty of the views of its mountains, Jebel Akhdar is a must visit. The Aflaj irrigation system provides the means to help its slopes be awash with pomegranates and Damask roses adding colour. The caves are worth an adventurous hike up the beautiful mountains.
The quaint fishing town of Salalah is a base to explore the surrounding mountains and the stunning beauty of the ’empty quarter’ – Rub al Khali. The desert here changes frequently in character and colour and thus is a photographer’s delight. Salalah is also the place to learn about the frankincense trade and how it shaped the region’s economy.
One of the most beautiful regions of Oman, the Musandam Peninsula (an island cut off from the rest of Oman) is renowned for the fjords, towering cliffs and small villages. Cruises, snorkeling are great ways to enjoy the brilliant scenery.
A three-hour drive from Muscat, the Wahiba Sands is as breathtaking as it gets. Colours of towering piles of sand change from day to evening and from noon to night. Camping here overnight is the best way to experience and take in its unparalleled beauty.
The Nizwa Fort of 35meters height and a diameter of 46meters defines this region isolated by the Hajar mountains. Developed as a bastion of conservatism to isolate itself from the outside influence of trade and conquest, the region proved difficult to those who tried to unify it with the rest of the country. The Jabreen Fort nearby known to be the most beautiful in all of Oman, is well stocked with antique elements and its painted ceilings are a display of the best of decorative art in Oman
